According to the renowned Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is working on Mini-LED display technology. It will make a debut in future iPad and MacBook devices. The panels will be based on the mini-LED technology and are expected to hit the market sometime between 2020-2021. It may not be as soon as you might expect, though. But considering how Apple usually takes a lot of time to bet in new display technologies, we can say that it’s coming soon.
Both, the MacBook and the iPad, will use around 10,000 LEDs for the displays. This represents a huge jump from the 576 LEDs in Apple’s upcoming Pro Display XDR. Each LED will be under 200 microns in size. The panels will be between 10 to 12-inch for the iPad Pro and 15 to 17-inch for the upcoming MacBook Pro.

Considering how the OLED technology is consolidated and how cheaper it has turned in the past years, we thought that Apple would take a while to jump in the mini-LED trend. While this technology is still maturing, it has a great advantage over OLED – No burn-in risk. If you’ve owned any smartphone that suffered from the dreadful burn-in issue, you know how terrible it is. In addition, if Apple chooses the mini-LED route, it can reduce its reliance on Samsung.
With mini-LEDs companies will be able to deliver smaller sizes while keeping the same performance and quality of an OLED panel. Reportedly, Apple will use LG Display as its main Mini-LED supplier. However, it will also get some help from Epistar, Zhen Ding, Radiant Opto-Electronics, Nichia, Avary Holding and TSMT.
