Instagram removed a feature that allowed users to spy on their friends’ activities. Some used it regularly to follow all activities of their contacts on the social network: likes, comments, new subscriptions, etc. Instagram has just announced that the feature will disappear in an upcoming update.

The feature has been in the Instagram app since 2011. Yet most users did not know about it. Those who knew about it used it regularly to spy on the activities of the people they follow. By clicking on the heart icon in the menu at the bottom of the application, it offers two tabs: “Following” and “You”. By switching to the first tab, you could access a list showing all the activities of the people we follow.

Vishal Shah, Instagram’s product manager, told the BuzzFeed website that this feature will be removed in a future update. It has existed since 2011 and has often be a reason for creating embarrassing situations. For example, a wife who discovered through this that her husband regularly liked photos of models in bikini.

This feature really hurt the privacy of Instagram users and the worst part is that many did not know it existed. This is one of the reasons for its abandonment. According to Vishal Shah, it was little used. Its operation is very similar to the activity history feature of Facebook, except that it is not accessible publicly, but only to the account holder who can use it to have a global view on all its activities.
