The Japanese giant, Sony recently held a press conference in China. During the event, the head of Sony’s imaging and sensing solutions business came to the public to reveal some interesting news about the company’s future. He also took the opportunity to show how the company has progressed over the past years with the development of powerful camera solutions for smartphones.
According to the company’s exec, the massive growth in demand for multi-camera and large-size chips in the mobile phone market exceeded its expectations. For instance, we had Sony’s IMX586 48MP camera was present in a large part of mid-range and flagship devices during 2019. The 48MP sensor was just a pioneer in a growing segment for ultra-powerful cameras. In the next year, we’ll see 64MP and 108MP stealing the show. Sony has ramped up production to not lose space to the competition.

Sony wants to bring SLR level quality to smartphones
The company further states that it is working to bring massive improvements to its sensors. In the next year, Sony cameras should sport better HDR, Low-Light, Auto-Focus and high-speed focus. Furthermore, the company is aiming high with a major goal of bringing SLR quality to smartphones. This is an ambitious goal, considering the amount of detail that SLR cameras are capable of capturing. Sony states that it will deploy large-size chips and will also gradually apply polarized sensing technology for industrial applications and new technology in surveillance, TOF and automotive sensing to mobile phone chips.
Moreover, the tech giant wants to deploy fusing tech to achieve new tweaks such as HDR + background blur. This new model will make focused objects super sharp while the background is blurred. In addition, the company is developing AF Pixel autofocus pixel technology and HDR+ Auto-focus which should improve the speed of Auto-Focus even in darker environments.
Sony expects to achieve 1.04 trillion yen (USD ~ $9.541.940.720,00) in sales. The image sensors segment will bring a massive 890 billion yen (USD ~$8.165.549.572) of that amount. The largest demand will come from the Chinese market.
