One of the biggest concerns with the arrival and popularization of folding smartphones is the cost and complexity of maintenance. The flexible screens, gears and the fragility of these devices keep most consumers away. However, Motorola is trying its best to minimize the maintenance cost of the new Motorola Razr. For instance, the company settled a price of $299 for the screen replacement service. This is $1,200 less than the actual price for the service that according to estimates should be $1,500.
Gizchina News of the week
Motorola’s screen replacement service is cheaper than its main rivals in the foldable segment. Huawei Mate X and Galaxy Fold would require customers to pay $600 to get a new display. Motorola’s move is a great way to popularize the product and reach more consumers. We all know that the Motorola RAZR display is smaller than Mate X and Fold. However, this still is a product that involves a good deal of relatively new technology in a mobile device.
We should see the prices dropping in the next year when the foldable smartphone market should gain major traction. There are several companies that are yet to join the foldable smartphone bandwagon. With display manufacturers like BOE being ready to produce foldable displays in a large scale, we will probably see more companies without Samsung, Huawei or Lenovo’s power joining this trend.
