Xbox Series X games will also be playable on Xbox One during the first two years

An Xbox executive has revealed in an interview that the Xbox Series X, Microsoft’s next-generation console, will not have exclusive games until at least two years after the launch of the console.

Instead, Matt Booty, director of Xbox Game Studios, has said that the company wants all the new games to be playable on both Xbox One and Series X.

“As our content comes to light during the next year, for two years, all our games, as it happens on PC, will work in all that family of devices. We want to make sure that if someone invests in Xbox from now [until the X Series comes out], they feel they have made a good investment and that we commit to them with the content”. says Matt Booty, director of Xbox Game Studios

Booty adds that Microsoft team is using Halo: Infinite to show the X Series, but it will be available on Xbox One.

The idea behind an “exclusive release” is to have a game that gives users a good reason to buy a console instead. An exclusive game gives developers the opportunity to fully squeeze the features of the new console, showing what it is capable of at launch.

Limiting exclusive titles until after launch could be a way to engage a second wave of buyers. On the contrary, we already know that the PS5 will have at least one exclusive title: Gearbox’s Godfall, which will also be available for the PC.

It is worth to mention that by the end of the year, Sony and Microsoft will release their new next-gen consoles. Between the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X, the data sheets and the performances seem fairly close, but some already predict the dominance of the PS5.

According to analyst Piers Harding-Rolls at IHS Markit Technology, Sony is not about to lose its leadership position. He predicts that the two manufacturers will both experience a better launch with their next-gen consoles than with the PS4 and Xbox One, but remains convinced that the PS5 will outperform the Xbox Series X.
