Samsung Galaxy S20 Phones to Come with 5x Optical Zoom, Report Suggests

Samsung Galaxy S11 Plus or Galaxy S20 Plus Ultra

We are already aware of the fact that Samsung is currently working on its next-gen flagship devices that includes Galaxy S20 lineup and Galaxy Fold aka Galaxy Z Flip. The S20 lineup has already been a part of numerous leaks and rumors for a couple of months. Well, we now have yet another information on the upcoming smartphone. If the recent report is to be believed, the Galaxy S20 phones will feature a 5x optical zoom capabilities. This information discards the previous rumor of 10x optical zoom in the telephoto camera of the phone.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Phones Will Feature 5x Optical Zoom

As per the report, the chaebol has recently received a delivery of 5x optical zoom prisms. These prisms are built by a Korean company that goes by the name Optron-Tec. For those who’re unaware, the same firm supplied the prisms for the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom smartphone. Even though the Optron is supplying prisms, Actro is actually integrating them into 5x optical zoom lenses. Lastly, Samsung Electro-Mechanics is completing the entire module which will then ultimately head towards Samsung Electronics for the device itself.

It is worth mentioning that Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra will feature a 48MP sensor meaning a 10x zoom can still be generated using pixel cropping technique. In fact, this will churn out a better image as compared to the true 10x optical zoom. This means that we might see the 10x zoom but not in optical form. Speaking of Zoom, Samsung might also bring Space Zoom feature that will reach 100x magnification digitally.

This report also mentions that the maker of prisms is looking to supply prisms to other manufacturers such as Huawei and Vivo. This makes sense since most high-end flagship devices are now targeting the 5x optical zoom feature. It would be interesting to see whether Huawei will get its hands on one of these prisms since both Samsung and Huawei are the biggest rivals to each other.
