With the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra and the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro finally unveiled with their 108MP main snappers, having an ultra high resolution sensor appears to have become the new trend. Will the Huawei P40 series, famously known for their high-end photography skills, follow the same path? Well, according to the latest rumors, it might not.
Huawei P40 Series to Pack a 52MP Sony IMX700 Image Sensor
New speculations do indeed suggest the upcoming Huawei P40 series may be equipped with a Sony IMX700 CMOS sensors. This sensor would have a resolution of 52MP; so less than half the res of the previously mentioned Galaxy S20 Ultra and Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro. The sensor would also still use the same RYYB color filter we found on the Huawei P30 Pro.
Rumors imply that the Sony IMX700 adopts a large 1 / 1.33 sensor area with support for 16-pixel binning technology (4×4). In other words, the largest unit of photosensitive pixel size can be combined to about 4.48μm. For comparison, Galaxy S20 Ultra’s 100-megapixel sensor supports 9-pixel integration (3×3), with a single large pixel of up to 2.4 μm; meanwhile Xiaomi’s 100-megapixel HMX sensor supports 4-pixel integration (2×2), with a single-pixel size of 1.6μm.

So, according to the info surfaced this far, the next Huawei P40 series flagship should have an advantage over the other two handsets recently announced. Sony’s bigger single pixel size of 4.48μm would indeed be able to produce better images in low light conditions; in comparison to the 2.4μm and 1.8μm from Samsung.
Finally, the P40 Pro should also be equipped with a 40-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, a 10x optical variable periscope lens and a ToF deep-sensing lens.

bravo huawei. it will destroy everething another one time. notjhing comes close to huawei…
I’m not a proffesional photographer so for me all the hype about pixels is overated. My P20 lite is good enough for my needs. If I need to take better photos I will get a digital camera. This just pushes up phone prices and is a marketing tool. So kudos to Huawei for not going for the most pixels
