This afternoon, Sony released a new flagship device, Xperia 1 Ⅱ (pronounced as Xperia 1 Mark Ⅱ). Sony Xperia 1 Ⅱ comes with triple rear cameras, all 12MP, corresponding to different focal lengths, and a Sony 3D iTOF sensor. However, surprisingly, the Sony Xperia 1 Ⅱ uses a Zeiss optical technology. Although Sony and Zeiss’ lens cooperation dates back to 1995, until today’s release of Xperia 1 Ⅱ, Sony has not used Zeiss optical components in smartphones.
Now, Sony and Zeiss have announced a formal partnership that will also extend to smartphones. Sony Xperia 1 II is the first Sony smartphone with a ZEISS optical system.
Sony’s new flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 II, will be equipped with ZEISS optical systems and T * (T-Star) anti-reflection coatings to improve image quality and provide consumers with the best photographic experience. Xperia 1 II offers the world’s first smartphone, with up to 20fps2 AF / AE tracking continuous shooting and 5G connectivity, providing a complete creative entertainment experience.

For Nokia fans, this may be shocking. Nokia phones no longer have exclusive access to ZEISS optical systems. However, ZEISS seems to be seeking new partnerships. It hopes to make its optical components available on an increasing number of smartphones. This will give the company a broader commercial significance.
