Five months after Samsung started mass production of 12GB LPDDR5 DRAM, the manufacturer now began manufacturing 16GB modules at its factory in Pyeongtaek. According to the Korean firm, the new package is built on the second-gen 10nm process and offers 5,500Mb/s data transfer speed.
The 16GB LPDDR5 platform is composed of eight 12-gigabit chips and four 8-gigabit chips. It provides “twice the DRAM capacity found in many higher-end laptops and gaming PCs today”. The reason for the ongoing development of technology and higher capacity is increasing demand for power, performance, and speed. However, enhanced 5G and AI features like smart photography is raising demand lately. This year, we’re going to see the first smartphones landing in the market with the 16GB LPDDR5 RAM. It’s interesting to point that this amount of RAM isn’t even so popular among domestic laptops. However, it will soon be in high-end smartphones.

Samsung also announced plans to mass-produce 16GB LPDDR5 products built on its third-generation 10nm-class (1z) process technology later this year. According to the South-Korean firm, it would up the data transfer speed to whopping 6,400Mb/s. Therefore the Korean giant can “solidify its competitive edge in markets such as premium mobile devices, high-end PCs and automotive applications”. We have no doubt that the company will achieve this goal. After all, Samsung is one of the world’s top suppliers of RAM modules.
