As scheduled, Vivo has finally unveiled its third iteration of Apex concept smartphone dubbed Vivo APEX 2020. The official announcement has finally ended the stream of numerous leaks and rumors on the device. For those who’re unaware, the device was initially supposed to launch at MWC 20, but due to the outbreak of Coronavirus that didn’t happen. Well, here is everything you need to know about the device.
Vivo APEX 2020: Design and Display
Talking about the design and display, Vivo APEX 2020 features a 6.45-inch FullView or Borderless display with a resolution of 2330×1080 pixels. The key highlight of the device is the fact that it has no notch on the display whatsoever. Furthermore, there is no pop-up camera mechanism as well. We’re looking at a full borderless experience with an in-display selfie camera.
This means that the front sensor itself lives inside the display. This is not something we’re seeing for the first time. Vivo has already achieved it with its older APEX device. The side of the display is curved with 120-degree sloping edges.
Vivo APEX 2020: No Ports and No Buttons
Another interesting aspect is the fact that there are no ports and no buttons. For charging needs, the phone relies on 60W fast wireless charging. Just to give you an idea, the 60W wireless charging tech will be able to top up a 2,00mAh battery in just 20 minutes. Speaking of the battery, the cell capacity for the device remains unknown. There is a pressure sensing power button that can be used to turn on or off the device. Sadly, there are no volume buttons on the device.
Vivo APEX 2020: Rear and Selfie Camera
Gizchina News of the week
In terms of optics, there’s a 48MP primary camera sensor on the back which, interestingly, comes with gimbal-like stabilization mechanism. As per the brand, this stabilization has a 200% extended angle compared to the traditional OIS. Using pixel binning, the lens will churn out 12MP images.
The primary sensor is accompanied by a 16MP periscope lens having an actual zoom range. The lens can go from 5x to 7.5x without any digital conversion. The entire periscope structure features two groups of fixed lenses and two groups of moving lenses. For selfies and video calling, there is a 16MP in-display selfie shooter which also uses 4-in-1 pixel binning to generate 4MP shots.
Other Specs and Features
As expected, the device doesn’t use the traditional sound technology i.e. a loudspeaker. Instead, we’re looking at third-gen Screen SoundCasting tech. Under the hood, the device is powered by Snapdragon 865 chipset paired with 12GB RAM and 256GB internal storage. The device does come with 5G connectivity support.
Price, Availability
Just like other APEX devices, Vivo APEX 2020 concept phone will likely remain the concept. It is merely designed to showcase what smartphones make can achieve on future devices. With that said, we might see features from this device in the future Vivo Nex devices.
