As one of the world’s largest foundries for 5nm chip production, TSMC is already planning to mass-produce 5nm process chips in the first half of this year.
Huawei Mate 40 with Kirin 1020 Will See a 50% Boost in Performance
There will be a peak period for large-scale shipments of 5nm chips only in the Q3 quarter of 2020, though. The iPhone 12 series and Huawei Mate 40 series are also expected to be the first mobile phones with 5nm chips.
So, after the success of the 7nm manufacturing process, the 5nm will be yet another excellent business for TSMC. Currently, there are two process technologies at 5nm: N5 and N5P. Compared with the older 7nm manufacturing process, N5 improves performance by 15%, power consumption by 30% and crystal density by 80%. Meanwhile, N5P brings 7% more performance than N5 and power consumption drops further by around 15%. According to industry experts, the 5nm N5 version will be mass-produced this year, while the N5P variant will be mass-produced in 2021.
At present, the R & D expenses to bring 5nm process chips have exceeded US $500 million; with only Huawei and Apple that will actually use the technology. It is indeed been reported that Huawei will release two 5nm chips this year and one of these will be in the Kirin series for mobile phones. As for the naming, the successor of the Kirin 990 should be called Kirin 1020.
Finally, it’s been reported in China that the Kirin 1020 will be over 50% more powerful than the Kirin 990; with the CPU architecture upgraded from Cortex A76 to Cortex A78. Which means Huawei will be skipping the Cortex A77 currently on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 altogether. Of course, the Kirin 1020 will also come with an integrated 5G modem.

They can put 1nm process chips, but without Google they can only pray
It’s matter of time before Google realise, the Huawei saga with America was the beginning of the end of their dominant grip on phone software
If Huawei can offer to the consumers security in their communications without snooping as Google does with the Android OS then goodbye Google ( enough, is enough with spying). Consumers has not alternative solution that is why buy Android and IOS if they had an alternative solution with a good os then nobody will buy Android or IOS. Is time for Huawei to offer an alternative solution in the OS ( to promote also Harmony OS). People around the world wants privacy ( Apple and Google are the big brother as Microsoft also in the private lives of humanity around the glob, they are fascists companies)
