Apple has obtained four patents attributable to augmented reality smart glasses whose development has been rumored for years now. Two of the new patents are related to charging technology. The name of the first is simply “Display System”: we are talking about a series of coils inserted in the support band that wraps the head; these coils would basically serve to manage wireless charging, once the glasses rest on the dedicated base. Another solution could be to use a stand, on which to actually hang glasses.

The second patent is about an “Electronic Device with Adjustable Support Structures”, and describes an “adjustable structure” divided into sections that rest on the forehead, with second and third portions that rest against the user’s cheeks or temples. The patent provides for the use of telescopic structures, elastic materials, inflatable elements and more to adhere optimally to the user.
The third patent is about an “Electronic Device With A Display to a Lens Element”. It describes how to mount a display on the lenses. The hypotheses considered include a transparent adhesive or a gel lens that adheres directly to the display. This could reduce the risk of impaired vision quality due to dust or dirt.

The fourth and final patent is about an “Ultrasonic Sensor”. It looks like a series of transceivers positioned on various parts of the viewer to surround the user’s head. In combination with a video camera, the system could help to reconstruct the real world in 3D. In addition to a precise sense of space. It’s a somewhat risky comparison, but it reminds you very closely of the concept of car parking sensors, don’t you think?
Apple has kept mum about its Glasses although it is known that CEO Tim Cook loves AR. He has said in the past that “I regard it (AR) as a big idea like the smartphone. The smartphone is for everyone, we don’t have to think the iPhone is about a certain demographic, or country or vertical market: it’s for everyone. I think AR is that big, it’s huge. I get excited because of the things that could be done that could improve a lot of lives. And be entertaining.”
