The development of 5G is in full throttle and its application is picking momentum in many parts of the world. Chinese manufacturers are the largest players in the 5G market thus its interesting to know what is happening with China’s 5G. Recently, China Mobile and China Telecom officially announced the number of 5G package users for the first time.
China Mobile and China Telecom has over 20 million 5G users
As of the end of February 2020, China Mobile’s 5G subscribers were 15.399 million, a net increase of 8.663 million. As for China Telecom, it currently has 5.17 million 5G subscribers. These two carriers collectively have 20.569 million active 5G users. There is still China Unicom which has not released the number of 5G users it has.

In addition, information from China Academy of Information and Communication Technology says that as of the end of February 2020, the total shipments of 5G mobile phones in the Chinese mainland mobile phone market is 21.614 million. Looking at this figure, there is only just over 1 million 5G user space left for China Unicom. Of course, China Unicom’s 5G users could be much more than 1 million.
It is also worth noting that China Telecom also stated that in order to complement the company’s mobile business development strategy and further enhance the accuracy of the disclosed information, after the company launched 5G services, it will only disclose the number of 5G package users and mobile users, and no longer disclose 4G User data.
China Mobile is still updating its 4G user data. As of the end of February, it was 745 million, with a net decrease of 12.474 million for the month. Among them, there were both upgrades to 5G and network transfers. In the first two months of this year, China Mobile lost 7.254 million subscribers.
