Today, CINNO Research released the latest Q1 semiconductor industry report for 2020. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, smartphone processor shipments declined sharply relative to Q1 2019. This result is not a surprise because processor shipment is a function os smartphone sales. According to the report, Huawei HiSilicon tops the list with a 43.9% share while Qualcomm and MediaTek follow in second and third with 32.8% and 13.1% respectively.

Looking at the performance table, Huawei and Qualcomm have a good grip on the Chinese market in terms of smartphone processors. However, Huawei is the only company that did not experience a year-on-year decline in Q1 2020. Huawei’s tablet shipment did not plunge and as a result, HiSilicon’s market share rose to 43.9%. This is the first time that Huawei is occupying the top spot as the largest mobile phone processor supplier.
Huawei’s HiSilicon does not sell chips to other manufacturers. However, Huawei does not use only HiSilicon chips on its devices. Nevertheless, in recent times, Huawei increased its adoption of HiSilicon chips. This is partly responsible for HiSilicon’s performance.
According to CINNO Research data, over 90% of Huawei phones in China use HiSilicon processors. HiSilicon currently has a number of 5G flagship and mid-range chips which it uses for its recent Huawei and Honor phones.
After the ban by the United States government, Huawei is trying to reduce its dependence on American companies.
