The US ban forced Huawei to rethink its strategies in the smartphone market. The company had to build its software ecosystem in the form of Huawei Mobile Services to keep relevant in the market. Moreover, it had to further reinforce its semiconductor division to keep pushing smartphones in all the price ranges. For that reason, Huawei’s HiSilicon entered the top 10 global semiconductor rankings. It’s the first Chinese company to ever join this list.

The results are even more impressive when we take in mind that in just one year, the company jumped to 10th position from 15th. It scored an impressive 54% growth YoY compared to Q1 2019. Huawei’s HiSilicon accounts for around 14% of the TSMC’s sales in 2019. If we combine the Chinese company’s demand with Apple, both companies secure 37% of TSMC’s total sales. The Chinese behemoth should keep investing in its chipset business through the next months. However, it will have to adapt again if the US Government extends the ban preventing Huawei from dealing with TSMC.
