American chipmaker, Qualcomm, and Taiwanese manufacturer, MediaTek, are the few manufacturers that can provide externally in terms of processors for 5G smartphones. As more countries join the ranks of 5G commercials, the coverage of 5G commercial networks expands. With this, the consumer demand for 5G smartphones continues to increase, which means that smartphone manufacturers will launch more 5G phones. With the increasing demand for 5G smartphones, the demand for 5G processors from mobile phone manufacturers is also increasing. The market demand for 5G smartphone processors from MediaTek and Qualcomm is also increasing.
According to recent reports, MediaTek’s 5G smartphone processor shipments are expected to exceed 80 million this year. This will probably promote MediaTek’s share of the global 5G smartphone processor market to at least 40%.
For its 5G chips, MediaTek has the Dimensity series. As of now, the company has the Dimensity 1000 series, 800 series, and 820 series. Some weeks ago, there were reports that MediaTek and Qualcomm will also introduce entry-level 5G smartphone processors. These entry-level 5G chips will hit the market in the third quarter of this year.
Gizchina News of the week
MediaTek Dimensity chips are quite good
According to MediaTek, the Dimensity 1000+ uses the world’s leading 5G technology. It also supports SA and NSA dual-mode 5G networks and is the only chip in the industry that supports 5G+5G dual-card dual standby. This chip also supports 5G dual-carrier aggregation technology. These bring users a faster and more stable network speed experience. In addition, MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ supports the industry’s highest 144Hz refresh rate. It also comes with MiraVision, a new feature for chip-level image quality optimization. More importantly, the Dimensity 1000+ is one of the only Cortex A77 flagship chips with integrated 5G baseband. With the latest report claiming that Xiaomi will use this chip, it will be a flagship device.
The Dimensity 800 is manufactured using TSMC’s 7nm process, supports 5G Sub-6GHz frequency bands, SA / NSA dual-module network, 2G-5G fourth-generation cellular connection, dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) technology and VoNR voice service. It is also worth mentioning that Dimensity 800 supports 5G dual-carrier aggregation (2CC CA). So, compared to other solutions that only support single carrier (1CC without CA), coverage of the 5G network gets improved by 30% by enabling multiple connections; while also bringing seamless switching and higher average throughput.
Just like the Dimensity 1000, the 800 series also features an independent AI processor APU 3.0 with a four-core architecture. This consists of three different types of cores: large cores, small cores, and micro cores. The setup allows for an AI performance of up to 2.4TOPS (2.4 trillion calculations per second). For those who aren’t aware, these numbers matter when we use AI software such as the one found in the camera apps.
Dimensity series has solid features and is affordable as well – no wonder so many chipsets will be sent this year.
