PS5 interface will be “100% improved with a new visual language”

Sony PS5

The PS5 will come with unprecedented features if we compare it with the PS4. Among the main features, we have the new super-fast SSD (Solid State Drive) that promises short loading times. Moreover, Sony states that a new console will support backward compatibility with support for 4,000 PS4 games at launch. During the company’s online streaming that happened on June 11, we also discovered two hardware models – one with a disc drive and another one without it. Now one question that remains is, what should we expect from the console’s new interface? According to Matt MacLaurin, vice president of UX Design for PlayStation, the UI of the new console will be another important element in the PS5 experience.

“We are excited to show everything that we have already achieved. The user interface is, first of all, practical. Moreover, we are implementing a new visual language and complete interface architecture. More importantly, the new interface has the objective of delivering the user a full experience in milliseconds across the entire UI.”

One of the main questions surrounding the new console is how its backward compatibility will work in real life. That is one of the most requested features of customers, after all, no one wants to lose a massive library of PS4 games after upgrading to the new PS5. Sony has once again reassured its commitment in bringing the PS4 games to the new console. During an interview with CNET, Jim Ryan, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO, stated that the company is looking into offering a huge library of 4,000 PS4 games at launch. More games will surely be supported in the future.

“The PlayStation 5 was designed to also play PS4 titles. We are in the process of testing an extensive library of 4,000 games with developers and publishers. So far, we are happy with all the progress made.”

The company’s senior vice president of platform planning, Hideaki Nishino, has previously stated how Sony wants to make current-generation titles suitable for the PS5. According to him, games will run at a higher frequency to benefit from advanced frames and resolutions. That sounds promising, just imagine current-gen games running at 4K resolution with 60 frames-per-second.

“We are expecting backward compatible games to run at a higher frequency on PS5. Therefore, the games will benefit from a more stable FPS and potentially higher resolutions. We are currently evaluating title-by-title to find any problems that need to be adjusted in relation to the original software.”

According to Sony, the new PlayStation 5 will be revealed on Holidays 2020. More details might come in July. Apart from all the new software features, we also need to know how much the new console will cost.
