Samsung has pretty much the foldable phone segment under its belt. The company had a rough start with the Galaxy Fold after a huge problem with the construction of the device’s display. This delayed the phone’s arrival, but when it came all problems were addressed. The Fold sold well, after all, the company is now preparing a sequel for the hybrid phone-tablet device. Earlier this year, the company extended its offer of foldable smartphones with the Galaxy Z Flip. The device was the first Samsung foldable phone to reach the market with a clamshell-like build resulting in a display that folds vertically. The Z Flip was also cheaper than the Galaxy Fold reaching a $1,500 price point. Now, Samsung seems to be ready to introduce a new Galaxy Z Flip 5G variant.
One of the characteristics the allowed the company to bring down the price of the Z Flip was the choice of the Snapdragon 855 chip and lack of 5G connectivity. The Z Flip is a success and sold more than the original Fold. Samsung wants to explore how well this handset can perform in the 5G terrain. The first reports about a 5G variant of the Z flip started a few months ago when the device’s model number – SM-F707B was spotted. Today, a new report corroborates to all rumors as Samsung has officially certified the “Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G name along with the very same model number. According to earlier reports, there is also a Korean model associated with the SM-F707N model number.
Gizchina News of the week
Snapdragon 855+ or Snapdragon 865?
The original Galaxy Z Flip boasts Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ chipset. In counterpart to the Snapdragon 865, the last year’s flagship SoC doesn’t require a 5G modem. This allows companies to either provide phones with 4G or 5G using this platform (The Snapdragon 865 is a 5G only platform). The new model should bear similar specifications, but this time around, it’ll have a 5G modem. Moreover, it will come with at least 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage just like the vanilla variant. Interestingly enough, there are rumors pointing to the presence of a Snapdragon 865 SoC in the new variant. That is an obvious and necessary upgrade, but the company already has the Fold 2 coming with this chipset. So we’ll have to wait for a confirmation about the chipset inside this phone.
The Z Flip is available in Mirror Black, Mirror Purple, Mirror Gold, Thom Browne Edition. According to reports, the Z Flip 5G will arrive in a new brown color. The new Galaxy Z Flip 5G variant is expected to come alongside the Galaxy Fold 2 and Note 20 smartphones on August 5. More details are likely to surface in the coming weeks.
