Huawei Mate 40, iPhone 12 will likely get 120Hz displays

Huawei mightfinally join the bandwagon of 120Hz refresh rate screens with the upcoming Mate 40 series. Earlier, reports from China also indicated that it could use the thinnest periscope zoom module on the new smartphone.

The shift from 90Hz to 120Hz refresh rate screens

Founder of Display Supply Chain Consultants(DSCC), Ross Young tweeted the list of smartphones in 2020 that will support the 120Hz refresh rate screens. The list included Apple, Samsung, OnePlus, Asus phones, and Huawei Mate 40.

This is interesting as the company’s latest flagship P40 series supports only up to 90Hz refresh rate. When the flagship launched back in March, the company emphasized more on the fine-tuned 90Hz display present of the P40 Pro, when its competitors were using a higher 120Hz screen.

Reports also indicated that the reason for the company to choose this could have been due to higher battery drain. This was likely due to the latest 5G antennas inside the device.

Hopping on the hype train

Before we draw conclusions, the company is already prepping its next flagship Mate 40 series with 120Hz displays. Smartphones follow a trend every year, and 2020 seems to be the year of high refresh rate screens. After all, it’s looking likely that Apple will also soon board the train with the iPhone 12 series. 

While the difference between the 90Hz and 120Hz is barely noticeable, it is understandable that the company should hop on the hype train to garner more attention, especially at a time when it is facing a lot of stress in global markets. Also, it makes us wonder if Huawei actually managed to overcome the early concerns of battery drain issues.

Huawei Mate 40: What can we expect?

Huawei’s Mate 40 will definitely be a breakthrough considering the leaks and rumours that are popping up from China. Reports already indicate that the company will use its in-house Kirin 1000 SoC which could be based on A77 or the newer A78 architecture. 

That’s not all, as the Mate 40 series is expected to sport a waterfall display with screen floating all the way to the edges and support a new side-touch interface for controlling the camera.

Speaking of which, Huawei could surprise with the thinnest periscope lens ever to achieve high-power continuous zoom and real-time focusing. Reports also indicate a National Day Launch which falls in October and we hope that Huawei doesn’t really disappoint us in the next Mate 40 series after being crowned the world’s largest smartphone maker beating Samsung this year.
