Motorola Razr 2 might not launch this year

Motorola’s flip phone, the Razr 2 was rumoured to launch this September. However, now it looks like the launch might get delayed further. The foldable Razr brought back the memories of the flip phones from the past. But the foldable Razr is a smartphone with a flexible display and hence comes with its own bag of surprises.

The report comes from a supply chain analyst Ross Young, who happens to be the CEO of DSCC as well. He says the Motorola Razr 2 will be delayed by a quarter and won’t be available until 2021.

Impact of COVID-19

The reason for this delay is said to be the virus. COVID-19 has hit civilians and big MNCs alike. Companies are struggling to meet demands, pushing their deadlines further due to lack of manpower. And that seems to be the case for the delay of Razr 2.

However, looking at Ross’s statement, there is a possibility that the device could get announced this year albeit being out of stock till 2021. Nonetheless, it looks like we will have to wait at least until the last quarter of 2020 to know more about this.

Razr 2: could this be it?

If we recall, the company’s alleged patents for the next foldable phone started surfacing on the internet in December. This followed by the leaks regarding the Flex-view display of the Razr 2. It was rumoured to be slightly larger than its predecessor at 6.7-inches. Moreover, it is said to exclude an Ultra-Thin Glass which is likely to be present on the Galaxy Fold 2.

This could be a gripe for the users as the older Razr had several issues when it comes to build quality or the easily scratchable display. This was followed by a leak which suggested the Codename of the device could be “smith” with a model number ‘XT2071-4’. 

Rumoured specifications include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 SoC paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB storage. The new Razr will likely get a rear camera upgrade with Samsung’s 48MP ISOCELL Bright GM1 sensor while the selfie shooter is likely a 20MP sensor.

The device will obviously run at least Android 10 out-of-the-box and come equipped with a 2,845mAh battery. It looks like the Razr 2 will also be a mid-range device albeit getting an upgrade to 5G.

Nevertheless, the delay has cleared the air for Samsung to sweep the market with its Galaxy Flip 5G and Fold 2 which are rumoured to debut this August.
