Redmi Note 9 5G tipped to be in the works, launch expected

Redmi Note 9

Xiaomi could be eyeing to refresh the Note series of Smartphones in China soon. A recent tip indicates that the company might launch a new Redmi smartphone in China and it could be a Redmi Note 9 5G.

The latest tip comes from reliable tipster Digital Chat station, who hints at the birth of a new Redmi 5G smartphone. A few days back, he himself had posted a few specifications of an unknown device and asked users to guess the price on Weibo.

Specifications: What’s New?

Today, he has sparked off the rumour mill hinting that the device could be a new Redmi smartphone. According to him, the device will have an LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate screen.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G 5G SoC is said to power the device. This will mark the entry of 5G on the Note series of smartphones. The company is yet to debut one in the series. But, it has unveiled several 5G powered devices recently with the latest being the Redmi 10X 5G. Despite the tip, what’s puzzling is that the Redmi K30i already exists in Redmi’s arsenal as the cheapest 5G phone. And it has these exact same specifications. Hence, the Redmi Note 9 5G sporting Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 690 5G chip makes more sense.

A cheaper Redmi with 5G connectivity?

However, the interesting part is that the tipster hinted at a 48MP camera on the device and this could be a downgrade if launched under the Redmi Note branding. If we recall, the Redmi Note 8 series debuted with a 64MP sensor and the Note 9 series has followed it this year as well.

In our guess, Xiaomi could position the device as a cheap 5G-ready phone rather than an upgraded version of its predecessors. Other than this, the tipster also said the phone will have a 5,000mAh battery and support 33W fast charging.

Could it break the 1000 Yuan barrier?

As promised by Lu Weibing earlier this year, Xiaomi has been launching a lot of 5G-Ready smartphones in 2020. The company debuted with a 5G version of the Redmi K30 back in December 2019.

This was followed by a flurry of devices including the Redmi K30i, K30 Pro Xiaomi’s Flagship Mi 10 series, and a new X series of smartphones.

However, the company is yet to refresh the Redmi’s Note series after the Note 8 Pro in China. As hinted by the tipster, the current cheapest Redmi 5G device is the K30i selling at CNY1499 for the 6GB/128GB variant and there is a possibility that Xiaomi could surprise us with a lower-priced Redmi device.

With the latest leak, it seems the company is getting ready to launch the cheapest 5G phone ever. Let’s wait for more info as we march ahead in the coming days.
