Huawei Mate 40 Pro renders reveal the complete design of the smartphone

Following the Huawei Mate 40, a similar leak occurred for the bigger version of the flagship family – the Mate 40 Pro. The photos demonstrate a number of fundamental differences between the two editions. So, the Pro version has a waterfall display and four rear cameras with a periscope for advanced optical zoom. But the design of the rear and front cameras is similar: a strip with two sensors in the screen and a huge round block on the back panel.

Noteworthy is an important feature different than its predecessor – the volume rocker is now not touch-sensitive, but physical. The designated dimensions are 162.8 x 75.5 x 9-10.4 mm (including the camera protrusion) with a 6.7” OLED screen. There is no clarity on the technical characteristics yet, because the situation with the Kirin 1000/1020 has not yet been clarified. The tentative date for the presentation is the end of October.

HiSilicon Kirin 1020 Will Debut With Mate 40 As Scheduled

We are waiting for Huawei’s new generation of chips to come in Q3,2020. It will be first launched on the new flagship Huawei Mate series. According to previous news, the new generation of Kirin chips is expected to be named Kirin 1020. Also, we know it will use TSMC’s 5nm process.

Gizchina News of the week

As one of the Weibo tipsters said, the cost of the new 5nm Kirin chip is between Apple A14 and Apple ARM CPU. So we can say the chip size is between them. However, the blogger added that for HiSilicon’s Kirin chip design, chip size and cost are not the main consideration. HiSilicon has no pressure to make a profit. Therefore, for products of the same level, the chip size of HiSilicon processors is generally larger than that of MTK and Qualcomm.

Not surprisingly, Huawei’s Mate 40 series will launch the 5nm Kirin 1020 chip, becoming the world’s first manufacturer of 5nm chips together with Apple.

In addition, the blogger stated, ‘The United States imposed further sanctions on Huawei in May. But I guarantee that Huawei will release Mate 40 phones with 5nm process Kirin processor as scheduled in October. About 8 million Mate 40 phones can be supplied in the fourth quarter.‘

As for the chip itself, the Kirin 1020 will be over 50% more powerful than the Kirin 990; with the CPU architecture upgraded from Cortex A76 to Cortex A78. Which means Huawei will be skipping the Cortex A77 currently on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 altogether. Of course, the Kirin 1020 will also come with an integrated 5G modem.
