Asus unveiled the ROG Phone 3 last month as the company’s first 2020 smartphone to land in the flagship terrain. However, the ROG series is more an enthusiast series than a mainstream smartphone lineup. For overall customers, the company is preparing the Asus ZenFone 7 series that debuts this month. According to reports, the company will unveil two smartphones – ZenFone 7 and ZenFone 7 Pro. One will come with the Snapdragon 865 while the other will boast its Plus counterpart. Today, a ZenFone 7 smartphone was benchmarked at the GeekBench database revealing the Snapdragon 865+ SoC along with 8GB of RAM.
Asus has just confirmed an event for August 26 in Taiwan where the new ZenFone 7 will be revealed. Before the announcement, someone took the handset to GeekBench. The benchmark database reveals a smartphone with model number ASUS_I002D. While we expect this to be the ZenFone 7 Pro, there still no confirmation that the vanilla ZenFone 7 will not come with the same chipset. The handset in this leak indeed comes with Qualcomm’s most cutting-edge chipset alongside 8GB of RAM.
The leak was first spotted by 91mobiles. They’ve have confirmed the chipset to be the SD865+ and not the standard chipset by digging inside the source code of the page. One time that Asus might release the ZenFone 7 as a more cost-effective flagship and its ZenFone 7 Pro as a true premium smartphone, then, we believe that just the Pro variant will retain this chipset.

The comeback of flipping-camera design
It’s good to see Asus using the cutting-edge chipsets of the moment which also ensures 5G connectivity. However, there’s another interesting detail that will make the ZenFone 7 series stand against the competition. According to reports, both devices will mark the comeback of the phone’s motorized flip camera. While the industry has moved to a punch-hole solution, Asus will keep its bezel-less full-screen design with a powerful camera combo that doubles as selfie camera. Rumors have it that this time around, we are looking at a Quad-Camera setup. The last year’s ZenFone 6 was also released with a lower price tag than other flagship phones. Hence, costumers are eagerly waiting to see what Asus will be capable of. Worth noting that the ZenFone 6 came with an LCD display.
We have to congratulate Asus for keeping the ZenFone 7 series design a secret until now. After all, it’s not common to see a smartphone slipping through the wave of leaks in this industry. So far, the phone still is a mystery. Of course, we still have some days to see if the ZenFone 7 and ZenFone 7 Pro will remain a mystery until the announcement.
So far rumored specifications also include Wi-Fi 6 support, NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, and a 5,000mAh battery with 30W fast-charging.
