Apple plans to assemble iPhone 12 in India

Stepping up the game of manufacturing products in India, smartphone manufacturing giant Apple is reportedly preparing to regionally produce the iPhone 12 series in India. This will be the seventh iPhone ideal to be made in the country providing a lift to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Atmanirbhar vision. According to a report, The new ‘Made in India’ iPhone 12 models; will be ready by the middle of next year.

It is worth mentioning that the brand has already started assembling its premium iPhone 11 at the Foxconn unit near Chennai, and its the first time it is manufacturing a top model in the country giving incentive to the Make-in-India initiative. Additionally, the production of the iPhone SE (2020) is expected to start in the country by the end of this year.

Production of iPhones in Bengaluru

Apple’s Taiwanese manufacturer Wistron has previously started experimental production of the latest iPhones project; at its new facility near Bengaluru, with a proposed investment of more than Rs 2,900 crores. Furthermore, Wistron has begun the recruitment process for the new unit; as it plans to hire about 10,000 employees in a phased manner. Currently, there are approximately 1,000 workers at work, according to a report in Business Standard.  However, The manufacturing facility will be fully operational from October.

Wistron’s increasing expansion is in line with Apple’s mid-term target; rolling out the latest upcoming smartphone models fast into its portfolio. This new plant at Narsapura near Bengaluru in Karnataka may be fully dedicated for the anticipated iPhone 12; while the iPhone SE (2020) will be mass-produced at the present plant in Bengaluru; the financial daily stated, quoting unnamed sources close with the development.

Previously, The Covid-19 pandemic has urged Apple to hold its big iPhone12 launch by a few weeks. “Last year, we started selling new iPhones in late September, this year we expect supply to be available a few weeks later,”; Apple Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri had said in an earnings call last month.

Multiple analysts are of the opinion that production new iPhone12 in India is a well-calculated approach to cut Apple’s dependence on China. Also, the firm wants to take benefit under the Centre’s production linked incentive (PLI) scheme. Foxconn, a Taiwan-based company, has been previously assembling the iPhone 7, XR and 11 at Sri City block near Hyderabad.

With the iPhone 12, Apple could be probably manufacturing the fastest flagship iPhone model to be locally assembled in India. Apple is still to launch the new iPhone 12 series; which will be delayed this year by a few weeks due to the pandemic. However, the iPhone 12 launch event is said to take place on October 12 with the most expensive iPhone 12 Pro to start shipping in November.
