Two years ago, ZTE was in a very similar situation that Huawei is now. However, the Chinese company didn’t have the resources to bypass the restrictions imposed by the US Government and was forced to cease its operations. Despite the lack of resources, the US government was more kind to ZTE than with Huawei, after all, it decided to remove the restrictions as long as the company complies with some requirements. Two years have passed, and ZTE is back to debut a revolutionary technology in the smartphone market with the ZTE Axon 20 5G – The in-display selfie camera.
Companies have been running towards the bezel-less display demand. First, we’ve had the waterdrop notch, then the pop-up camera mechanisms which really allowed users to feel a full-screen display. This year, however, most companies decided to drop the pop-up camera systems. The mainstream solution of 2020 is the punch-hole cameras. These cameras, however, aren’t less intrusive than notch are. Some users will also dislike the asymmetric feel of side-aligned punch-holes. The real advancement that we need for a true bezel-less display will come in the form of an in-display camera.

Axon 20 – The world’s first in-display selfie smartphone to be commercially available
Smartphone OEMs have been working hard to deliver a proper in-display camera since the quality delivered seems to be the biggest problem in these appliances. Apparently, ZTE managed to overcome the challenges and is confident with the technology featured by the ZTE Axon 20 5G. Today, the Chinese firm published a new teaser to build the hype for the upcoming September 1 reveal.
The teaser video is really funny since it plays with all existing selfie camera solutions like notches, punch-holes, and pop-up modules. A render shared by the company yesterday confirmed that ZTE Axon 20 5G isn’t only about the selfie camera.
ZTE Axon 20 5G specifications
The smartphone will sport a Quad-Camera setup on the back. It’s a rectangular module comprising a 64MP main, one 8MP unit, and two 2MP units. The remaining specifications include a 6.92-inch OLED display with a FullHD+ resolution. This panel has an in-display selfie snapper with 32MP resolution. It also sports an under-glass fingerprint scanner. The phone also has 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB of Storage. It draws power from a 4,120mAH battery with fast-charging support. Unfortunately, the chipset choice may disappoint some users. According to reports, it will sport an octa-core processor clocked at 2.4GHz which likely is the Snapdragon 765G SoC.
We still have a lot of time before the ZTE Axon 20 5G release. So, the company may keep throwing new teasers on us.
