According to a recent report, the United States government is considering new restrictions on the export of chip equipment (semiconductor manufacturing tools) and related software, lasers, sensors, and other technologies. This is to prevent them from falling into the hands of American rivals such as China. The U.S. Department of Commerce is seeking public opinion on how to define new technologies. It needs to determine “whether there are specific foundational technologies that warrant more restrictive controls.

In recent times, there have been strict export controls to many Chinese manufacturers notably Huawei. The U.S. claims that it is protecting its national security with these export controls on chip equipment and other tools. The government says that these new technologies must not fall into the hands of their enemies. This is because they may use it for other purposes. The likes of “China, Russia, & Venezuela” are not in the U.S. good books and should not have these techs.
The Trump administration was also finalizing a set of narrow rules restricting exports of products such as quantum computing and 3D printing technology. The general public has about two months to post their comments. It will be published in the Federal Register tomorrow and from then, the public can comment.
