Recently, Ams officially issued a statement. This company released the industry’s first light-sensing/proximity/light source flicker detection sensor module optimized for OLED screen applications of smartphones—TMD3719.

The sensor integrates three functions of ambient light sensing, proximity detection, and light source flicker detection. As a result, it provides a complete ‘under the OLED screen’ (BOLED) optical sensing solution.

Officially, TMD3719 is the world’s first device that overcomes major technical challenges such as ambient light sensing, proximity sensing, and light source flicker detection under OLED screens.

According to the company: TMD3719 light sensing/proximity/light source flicker detection sensor can be placed behind the OLED display. Thus, it can support OEM design of full-screen smartphones (under-screen camera models); TMD3719 integrates a complete set of light source flicker sensing system, eliminates issues generated when the camera captures images.

  • Ambient light sensing: it extracts real ambient light intensity information, and automatically controls the display brightness according to the environment.
  • Proximity sensor: it realizes functions similar to anti-mistouch, eliminating visible display distortion.
  • Light source flicker detection: it optimizes lens imaging performance, eliminating ripples.

According to the official statement, the TMD3719 optical sensor adopts a 6.35 mm x 3.00 mm x 1.00 mm surface mount package, and its samples are now available.

Who Has Developed An Under-Screen Camera Solution?

As a reminder, just recently, ZTE released the world’s first under-screen camera namely the ZTE Axon 20 5G. But it’s not as perfect as we wish. So it’s better to wait for the Xiaomi model, which should hit the market in early 2021. This manufacturer has already developed the third-gen of its under-screen camera solution. It is considered to be the best option at the moment.

Xiaomi’s third-generation off-screen camera technology can make all physical pixels light up 100%, solving the pain points of the previous two generations of off-screen camera technology. The former adopts a new self-developed pixel arrangement. This allows the screen to pass light through the sub-pixel gap area without sacrificing pixel density. There are twice more horizontal/vertical pixels in the display area. And the selfie imaging is comparable to traditional front-facing cameras.
