Taiwanese chip maker, MediaTek, has been quite impressive over the past few years especially in the budget and mid-range SoC segment. However, the company has been trying to replicate similar success stories in the mid-to-high-end and flagship sectors. In this regard, Qualcomm seems to always be a step ahead. At some point, the company decided to abandon the high-end market completely, and focus only on the entry-level chipset. However, after the emergence of its 5G Dimensity series, it appears that there is still hope for MediaTek in the flagship segment.
The MediaTek Dimensity 1000 is the earliest SoC in the new lineup. This chip uses the latest ARM Cortex-A77 core, Mali-G77 GPU, and 5G modem. However, so far, it is strange that MediaTek Dimensity 1000 equipment is limited to the Chinese market. Nevertheless, this situation may soon change.
The company continues to introduce more chipsets under the new brand. It has mid-range chips such as Dimensity 800, Dimensity 820, Dimensity 1000+, and Dimensity 720. These chipsets may sound impressive, but we have yet to see devices with Dimensity chipsets launched internationally. To this end, we can not really speak about the global performance of the MediaTek Dimensity series.
Gizchina News of the week
Dimensity chips will hit the global stage soon
A few weeks ago, the company had a conference call to discuss its earnings for the second quarter of 2020. The company gave us an idea of when to expect the Dimensity chip in the international market. However, it did not say which company will take this series to the global stage. TSMC said
“It is very important that our 5G smartphones will start shipping to regions outside of mainland China in the third quarter.”
MediaTek did not disclose much information, except that the chipset will start shipping in the third quarter of 2020. We do not know which OEM will take the lead in bringing Dimensity smartphones to the global market.
The current list of smartphones with Dimensity SoC includes iQOO Z1 (Dimensity 1000+), Oppo Reno3 5G (Dimensity 1000L), Redmi 10X series (Dimensity 820), ZTE Axon 11 SE, Honor Play 4 series, and Honor X10 Max (Dimensity 800).
The flagship SoC field urgently needs a competitive alternative, and MediaTek’s Dimensity series seems to be just the answer we are looking for. Whether MediaTek can use its new brand to gain a foothold with Qualcomm remains to be seen. More importantly, we do not know if its performance and efficiency can be comparable to the Snapdragon’s 7xx and 8xx series chipsets.
