Today, Counterpoint released a report on the market share and growth of smartphone shipments in the third quarter of 2020: Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, Apple, and OPPO are among the top five.
Counterpoint: Global Smartphone Shipments
In the third quarter of 2020, Samsung’s smartphone shipments reached 79.8 million, an increase of 47% from the previous quarter, ranking first. Huawei’s smartphone shipments reached 50.9 million, a decrease of 7% from the previous month. Xiaomi shipments reached 46.2 million, an increase of 75% month-on-month. Apple smartphone shipments reached 41.7 million, an increase of 11% month-on-month. OPPO smartphone sales reached 31 million, an increase of 26% month-on-month, ranking among the top five.
It is worth mentioning that Realme ranked seventh with 14.8 million shipments. As a former OPPO overseas sub-brand, Realme has further increased its shipments after returning to the Chinese market. Taken together, OPPO and Realme smartphone shipments totaled 45.8 million units in the third quarter of 2020, surpassing Apple.
IDC: Global Smartphone Shipments
Apart from this, IDC provided a similar data today as well. The report shows that global smartphone shipments in the third quarter were 353.6 million units, a 1.3% drop from 358.5 million units in the same period last year.

Samsung continues to rank first with a market share of 22.7%. Huawei ranked second, but its shipments fell 22% year-on-year to 51.9 million units, with a market share of 14.7%. Xiaomi’s shipments in the third quarter increased by 42% year-on-year to 46.5 million units, surpassing Apple to rank third. Apple shipped 41.6 million iPhones in the quarter, down 10.6% year-on-year. VIVO ranked fifth with shipments of 31.5 million units, an increase of 4.2% year-on-year.
Who Is More Accurate – IDC or Counterpoint?
As you can see, there are some differences between these two. And what’s interesting, according to various research companies, the fifth place is given to different brands. As for Counterpoint, it belongs to OPPO. And IDC thinks it belongs to VIVO.
Anyways, prior to this, Countperoint released to other reports concerning the smartphone shipments in the Indian and Chinese market in the third quarter of 2020. In the former region, Samsung has got its throne back, surpassing Xiaomi. But in China, Huawei has no rivals.
