Experts of the analytical company Gartner summed up the results of the fourth quarter of 2020 in the PC market. The report said that sales of “traditional PCs”, which includes desktops, laptops and workstations, but does not include tablets and x86-compatible servers, in the past quarter exceeded 91.6 million units. This value corresponds to an increase in annual terms of 26.1%.
Since the fourth quarter is the last quarter of the year, it became possible to assess the sales growth for the year as a whole. It amounted to 13.1%.
To assess the scale of growth, it is enough to remember that the last time the PC market grew at such a rate was ten years ago. In 2020, an indicator of 13.7% was recorded. For six of the past ten years, the PC market has been shrinking.
Analysts attribute the increase in sales to an increase in the number of people who work and study from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lenovo is the market leader according to IDC. The Chinese manufacturer owns 25.2% of the market at the end of the quarter. The year before, Lenovo’s share was 24.7%.
The share of HP, ranked second, declined over the year from 23.7% to 20.9%. Third place belongs to Dell. The share of this company for, like a year ago, is 17.2%.
The top five also include Apple and the Acer Group. Apple was able to increase its share over the year from 6.8% to 8.0%, and Acer – from 6.1% to 7.2%.
The top five at the end of the year look exactly the same. The difference is only in the size of the shares. Lenovo’s share is 24.0%, HP – 22.4%, Dell – 16.6%, Apple – 7.6%, Acer Group – 6.9%.

Lenovo surpasses HP again to top the global traditional PC market
Popular market research firm, IDC, previously released its PC market share report for the third quarter of 2020. In the third quarter of 2020, global PC shipments increased by 14.6% year-on-year to 81.3 million units. The top five manufacturers are Lenovo, HP, Dell, Apple, and Acer. In addition, IDC also gave a chart of the quarterly reports of the top manufacturers. The data shows that although HP temporarily occupied the top spot in shipments in the second quarter of this year, Lenovo once again regained that position in the third quarter.
IDC mobile device tracker research manager, Jitesh Ubrani, said that if it were not for the shortage of parts, notebook shipments would have been even higher in the third quarter. In addition, he also indicated that in the quarter, gaming laptops, Chromebooks, and netbooks that support data traffic all performed well and even set new highs.
The shortage of parts will not be going away anytime soon. This is because the initial business plan did not anticipate the demand. “The PC industry rode into the third quarter with a sizeable backlog of unfulfilled orders,” said Linn Huang, research vice president, Devices and Displays at IDC. “And it appears the quarter will end under the same auspices. Given that the shortages have been due more to a shortfall of business planning than a technical glitch, we do not anticipate a sudden surge in capacity. Consequently, this backlog will likely carry into 2021.”
