Motorola passed a lot of time focusing in the mid-range and low-end segments. After a couple of years, the brand released the Motorola Edge+ last year as its flagship smartphone. Now, the brand is gearing up to launch a new handset dubbed Motorola Edge S that will keep this new flagship. However, it will not be a flagship phone featuring a Snapdragon 888. Instead, it will pack the Snapdragon 870 that is an incremental upgrade over last year’s Snapdragon 865+, using the 7nm standard and Cortex-A78 cores.
Motorola will introduce its new flagship on January 26. A couple of days before the announcement, live images of the new smartphone have emerged on Weibo. Meanwhile, an AnTuTu test run shared by Lenovo China’s GM of mobile, Chen Jin, gives us an idea about the performance of the new smartphone.
According to the leaked images, the Motorola Edge S will stick with current trends of tall display and punch-hole cutouts. In fact, the handset brings a pill-shaped punch role that will serve as a house for two selfie snappers. The software even recognizes the phone as a Motorola Edge+. The phone brings a square-shaped camera island that serves as a house for a primary 64MP camera. We assume that the other three sensors will stand for ultrawide shots, macro, and depth sensing.
Gizchina News of the week
The Snapdragon 870 will make the Motorola Edge S more powerful than last year’s flagships
When it comes to the AnTuTu benchmark, the phone achieved a combined score of 679,860 points which is really high. The Snapdragon 888-powered phones are set to cross the 700K barrier and can even reach 800K on gaming smartphones. So, in an “AnTuTu Benchmark Perspective,” the Snapdragon 870 seems to be a really solid offering and may stand as a better choice for cost-effective flagships. It seems to be Qualcomm’s response to the newly launched MediaTek Dimensity 1200 and 1100 chipsets.
In comparison with the AnTuTu December leaderboard, the Moto Edge S seems to be ahead of Snapdragon 865 powered phones. Not a big surprise, after all, the Snapdragon 870 is just like a Snapdragon 865++. The Edge S scored 189,694 in the CPU tests, 290,268 in the GPU department, 103,322 in the Memory test, and 96,575 on the UX Benchmark.
One time that Qualcomm is picking January for a new flagship with the Snapdragon 870, we expect its next Motorola Edge phone to come several months later.
