The Google Pixel 4A debuted last year as an affordable option over the original phone. It was rumored to come during Google I/O, but the event was delayed due to the ongoing pandemic. For this year, we’re starting to see new rumors about new Google smartphones at this year’s developer conference. The search giant will likely host its annual developer conference between May or June and is expected to launch the next-gen Google Pixel smartphones. Recently, popular tipster Jon Prosser revealed that the new Google smartphone is slated to launch on June 11. He didn’t reveal the name of the phone, but today, he has confirmed that this will be the Pixel 5a, the more affordable version of Pixel 5.

Jon Prosser shared a tweet from his official Twitter handle claiming that the source has confirmed that Google is planning to launch the Pixel 5a on June 11th, 2021. It is the time when the search giant will launch the Android 12 operating system. This is a little bit curious since the brand tends to unveil its new Android version every year in September. For that reason, let’s take this with a pinch or two of salt. Besides, the handset, Google will start its “wave of launches” in April with the release of the new Pixel Buds True Wireless earphones.

Pixel 5a – A standard 4G mid-range, or a 5G mid-range?

Coming back, Prosser did not reveal much about the specifications of the Pixel 5a smartphone. We expect more details to reveal in the coming months as we move closer to the launch. We’re not expecting anything beyond a standard mid-range smartphone. After all, the Pixel 5 isn’t a true flagship with its Snapdragon 765G. The doubt that remains now is if the Pixel 5a will be a 4G or a 5G handset. Not bringing a 5G handset right now, would be a waste, but that can be the case. For a 4G phone, we expect the Snapdragon 732G, while a 5G phone can sport the Snapdragon 690.

A couple of weeks ago, the leaked render of the Pixel 5a surfaced on the web revealing the design of the handset. Those who are familiar with the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a design will not see a big difference here. While the handset may not bring stable Android 12, it can kickstart the beta program rollout. The Android 12 is set to bring major refreshments to the system and new features such as one-handed mode.

We believe that Android 12 will be “officially announced” on Google I/O. This announcement may coincide with the Pixel 5a launch. The device may also be eligible for a beta update straight out of the box.
