Strategy Analytics recently released a report on “Smartphone: Global Artificial Intelligence Technology Forecast to 2025”. According to the report, smartphone manufacturers are rapidly adopting on-device AI. Ville-Petteri Ukonaho, deputy director of Strategy Analytics, said, “We predict that by 2021, 71% of all smartphones sold worldwide will have device-side AI.”
The report points out that AI is applicable for various functions in smartphones. It works for power management, imaging, virtual assistants, and improving device performance. The report emphasizes the fact that AI is one of the most important technology in contemporary smartphones. For smartphone and chipset suppliers, it is imperative to promote the increase of AI computing power on the device side to achieve edge AI computing.
According to Strategy Analytics, Artificial Intelligence (AI) smartphones are smartphones that use AI cores/processors for machine learning and deep learning tasks. AI smartphones use dedicated AI cores and AI co-processors to run AI tasks locally on the device side. It does not transmit any data to the cloud.
Worldwide shipments of 5G smartphones will approach 550 million units
With reference to industry representatives, Digitimes has published a forecast related to the volume of shipments of smartphones with 5G support. There are expectations that 5G smartphones will hit 550 million units.

According to IDC, in 2020, 5G-enabled models accounted for about 10% of total smartphone production, which amounted to 1.29 billion units, a decrease compared to 2019 by 5.9%.

500 million 5G users expected in 2021 in China alone
A Huawei spokesman has confirmed that the company will be attending Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2021, which will take place from 23 to 25 February this year. At this event, the company will showcase a wide range of new products, including new 5G base stations.
Huawei VP of Wireless Product Line Gan Bin said the global rollout of 5G networks has entered a fast phase. Furthermore, he claims that this year the number of 5G users will exceed 500 million. This is for China alone.
Huawei expects 5G networks to start experiencing medium to high loads soon. The growth rate of 5G users in China will reach 30% in 2021. In 2022, it will reach 42.9% and 56.8% in 2023. By 2024, it will be 70.4% while in 2025, it will be at 81.7%.
As a reminder, Huawei’s network equipment is banned in the US and some European countries that support US policy.
