OnePlus is switching to ColorOS in China starting with the OnePlus 9


OnePlus phones ship with HydrogenOS in China and OxygenOS in the rest of the world. Starting with the OnePlus 9 series, OnePlus phones sold in China will ship with ColorOS.

The announcement was made today by Pete Lau on his Weibo page. So, the founder and CEO revealed that the OnePlus 9 series will have the ColorOS user interface preinstalled.

OnePlus is ditching OxygenOS in favor of ColorOS

ColorOS is Oppo’s skin for Android. The user interface also shipped with Realme-branded phones for a while before they announced their own skin called realme UI. Interestingly, Realme, a younger brand than OnePlus, has ditched ColorOS, while OnePlus is moving from its own UI to ColorOS.

Pete Lau also added that previous devices running HydrogenOS will continue to receive updates. However, we do not know if OnePlus plans to migrate its older devices from HydrogenOS to ColorOS.

OnePlus hasn’t said anything about the future of OxygenOS, so the company will continue to equip OnePlus phones sold outside of China with this user interface.

According to the latest reports, the beta version of the ColorOS user interface is now available in beta version for users of OnePlus 8 smartphones in China.

OnePlus has announced that it is planning to migrate its older devices from HydrogenOS to ColorOS in China.

As a reminder, OnePlus has two operating systems for its smartphones – HydrogenOS in China and OxygenOS for the rest of the world. The OxygenOS user interface continues to have support, which is not the case for HydrogenOS. The information that the global versions of OnePlus smartphones will continue to run the OxygenOS user interface, according to Gary C., Head of OxygenOS.

In his post, Gary C writes that “devices for the Chinese market will now use a customized version of ColorOS, adapted specifically for OnePlus smartphones.” OnePlus 8 users in China looking to upgrade to ColorOS can already install the beta version.

OnePlus was founded by former Oppo employees Pete Lau and Carl Pei. OnePlus uses Oppo’s product lines and supply chains, and some OnePlus devices closely resemble the designs of some Oppo phones.

It is worth mentioning that recently, OnePlus officially announced the launch date for the OnePlus 9 series. According to the company’s Twitter page, the OnePlus 9 series will arrive on March 23rd. This smartphone will be the first to use theĀ Hasselblad smartphone imaging system. Furthermore, the company reports that it will have a three-year cooperation with Hasselblad. OnePlus believes that this year will be the “OnePlus Image Year”.
