Sony Group told analysts that PlayStation 5 will still be in short supply by 2022. This means that the sales target of Sony’s latest game console will remain limited. When Sony released its financial report in late April, it said that since its launch last year, Sony PlayStation 5 has sold 7.8 million units as of March 31. The company also said that it plans to sell at least 14.8 million units in the current fiscal year.
In addition, as of the end of 2020, the company’s record shows that it has shipped 4.5 million PS5 units worldwide. This means that from January to March 2021, Sony PS5 shipped 3.3 million units.
Sony told analysts at a press conference after the earnings report that keeping up with strong demand is a challenge. Since its release in November last year, it has been really difficult to keep its inventory. This is partly because of the shortage of parts such as semiconductors.
