Xiaomi claims that high charging power does not damage batteries

As the industry continues to advance, there is a need for more power in smartphones. However, manufacturers are now increasing the charging capacity. This reduces the need for larger batteries. However, how to maintain battery life under such high-frequency charging is a problem that manufacturers need to pay attention to. Chinese manufacturer adopts a 10C graphene-based design to make the battery have higher electronic and ion conduction characteristics.

Xiaomi high charging power

Xiaomi chose a more stable positive and negative battery material for the 10C system. It also uses a specially designed 10C Electrolyte to achieve better protection for battery materials. According to Xiaomi, the battery in its 200W fast charge can maintain more than 80% of energy after 800 cycles. This is much more than the 60% retention requirements after 400 cycles in China.

The safety of charging has always been of great concern to ordinary consumers. According to Xiaomi engineers, the 200W fast charge has protection in four ways. They include the charging temperature, charging voltage, charging current, and charging protocol. There are a total of 40 multiple safety protection measures.

For example, in terms of motherboard design, Xiaomi adopts an independent MCU to cooperate with the charging algorithm. Xiaomi also adds some corrosion-resistant rhodium-ruthenium alloy materials to the Type-C port. This can reduce the corrosion of the Type-C interface by fast charging. In addition, Xiaomi has designed an over-temperature protection detection circuit on the Type-C port to detect the temperature of the charging port. When it is too high, the charging power can be reduced in time or the charging path can be cut off.

High charging power requires special designs

Furthermore, Xiaomi claims that it has a 10C high-power fast-charging system architecture. The anode graphite of the fast ion ring provides a fast channel for lithium ions to embed in the anode graphite. This can protect the battery from unsafe fast charging.

When it comes to safety, one has to talk about heat generation. This time the Xiaomi 200W fast charge uses a parallel design. The power conversion efficiency is 98.6%, which will be the industry’s highest if true. In terms of software, Xiaomi adopts a multi-level gradual current algorithm. For the 120W wireless charging technology, Xiaomi uses the latest multi-strand winding technology on the coil to optimize the nanocrystalline shielding material to ensure that the efficiency will not be lost when the power is high.

In terms of the heat dissipation system, Xiaomi placed a VC soaking plate directly on the charging IC. The heat on the front of the battery is dissipated through the aluminum alloy middle frame. The heat on the rear is dissipated by a specially thickened graphite sheet that accounts for more than 60% of the mobile phone. According to Xiaomi, with this design, the temperature of 200W charging is basically the same as that of 120W.

Of course, Xiaomi still feels that the 50W limit in the solicitation of opinions is somewhat low. The company’s opinion is that high charging power does not necessarily damage batteries. However, the overall design will determine how well the battery will perform.
