The development of the smartphone industry has been very rapid in recent years. The battery segment has seen significant growth and we now have up to 5000 mAh batteries on smartphones. Furthermore, the charging capacity of smartphones is also getting higher. Just a few years ago, we didn’t have a charging capacity above 18W. Today, 65W fast charging is like a baseline for many flagships while 120W fast charging is the peak for now. Just as wired fast charging is increasing, so is wireless fast charging capacity.
The current wireless fast charging capacity is 50W, however, some manufacturers showed up to 120W wireless charging power. This charging capacity can fill a 4000mAh smartphone in 15 minutes. While this appears so good, not all that glitters turns out to be gold. Even though users are happy about the fast charging time, there are great concerns because of the potential risk.

However, the hopes of a 120W wireless fast charging may not pull through. According to a report, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the “Interim Provisions on the Radio Management of Wireless Charging (Power Transmission) Equipment (Draft for Comment)”. This preliminary document lists some guidelines for the production and power transmission of wireless chargers. The document states that if a wireless charger must sell in China, its charging capacity will not exceed 50W. Obviously, 120W far exceeds the requirements in the “Draft for Comments” and may be suspended by supervision in the future.
High wireless charging could be harmful
The reason for clear requirements on the working frequency band and power upper limit of wireless equipment is to regulate the orderly use of radio spectrum resources by wireless charging (power transmission) equipment. Furthermore, it is trying to avoid harmful interference to various legally-developed radio services, and maintain the order of airwaves.
According to reports, if the wireless charging power is too high, it may cause safety hazards to some sectors. The documents list aviation, shipping, astronomical observation, and other areas that high wireless charging may affect.
Although it may not be possible to surpass the “50W” limit, it is good for manufacturers to regulate power and carry out technological evolution in an orderly manner. However, there are reports that the 120W fast charging is not sustainable. This means that during charging, the peak power could hit 120W at some point. However, it will not be able to sustain charging at 120W for a long time.
