Yesterday a set of leaked renders emerged alongside key specs for an unreleased Motorola smartphone dubbed Motorola Defy. The leaks left just a little for the imagination. Well, thankfully, those who got excited with the new budget smartphone will not need to wait any longer as Motorola has officially revealed the Motorola Defy (2021) as a budget-oriented rugged smartphone. This new smartphone certainly brings certain nostalgia for those who ever experienced the original Motorola Defy. The device was launched back in 2010 as the world’s first dustproof and water-resistant smartphone. Now, it’s time to bring it to 2021 and to the new smartphone era. Unfortunately, not so “new” since it lacks 5G connectivity.
Motorola Defy (2021) specifications
The Motorola Defy is produced by a Bullitt Group, a firm that mostly produces and sells CAT lines of rugged smartphones. Based on this, the Motorola Defy sports a double-sealed design, IP68 rating, and a Military standard MIL-SPEC 810H rating. Putting the device’s ruggedness aside let’s dive into the specifications that make this a smartphone.
The handset flaunts a 6.5-inch IPS LCD screen with HD+ pixel resolution. The display panel is coated with 0.7mm Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection and is recessed 0.5mm for extra protection. This display only offers a 60 Hz of refresh rate, but the goal here clearly is ruggedness and not multimedia experience. The handset adopts a waterdrop notch design language and has slightly thick bezels all around.
Gizchina News of the week
Under the hood, we have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 SoC. This chipset was launched last year as a sequel for the Snapdragon 665 and was widely used by many mid-range smartphones. It’s purely a mid-range SoC that can run normal apps and do lightweight tasks without any hassle. Unfortunately, there is only one single variant with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of Internal Storage. Thankfully you can hook up a microSD card for further memory expansion.
The device comes with Android 10… yes
On the software front, we have one of the major downsides of this device. Even in mid-2021, Motorola decided to bring this device with Android 10. Perhaps this has something to do with the manufacturer, but that still is strange. Anyway, the firm states that it will receive Android 11 later on. Judging by the company’s recent track record this means several months later. The device comes with a programmable key with Push to Talk mode.
In terms of photography, the device comes with a triple-camera setup. The centered camera module incorporates a 48MP f/1.8 primary camera, a 2MP depth sensor, and a 2MP macro lens. On the front, it brings an 8MP selfie snapper. The handset has a physical fingerprint scanner, Dual-SIM, 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, dual-band Wi-Fi, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It draws powers from a 5,000mAh battery with 20W fast charging via a USB-C port.
Pricing and Availability
The Motorola Defy comes in Forged Green and Black colorways. It sports a sleek design with a textured grippy finish. The device costs 329 Euros. Sales will start in select European and LATAM markets. Unfortunately, there aren’t details about a possible global release.
