Tecno and other companies in the Transsion Holdings conglomerate have started a big quest on the international market. Something that started in 2020 is set to reach new heights this year. Infinix will launch a flagship smartphone, or even an entire lineup of Zero X smartphones with 160W fast-charging, 50W wireless charging, and more. Now, Tecno is also presenting its first take into the premium smartphone segment – Tecno Phantom X. So far, Tecno has been focusing on entry-level and mid-range smartphones for emerging markets. Now, it wants to gain traction in the high-tier segment. Now, the company is launching Phantom as a separate sub-brand that will create premium smartphones.
Tecno Phantom X specifications
The first smartphone to come under Phantom branding is the Tecno Phantom X. The new handset comes with a very promising camera setup on the front and the back. In the main camera department, we have a 50MP main camera with a large 1/1.3-inch sensor with 1.2um native pixels that grow to 2.4um with binning. This sensor features Dual Pixel and Laser autofocus and sits behind an f/1.85 lens. The second camera is a 13MP telephoto unit with a 50mm lens, it takes the role of a portrait camera.
Apart from this function, the focal length also offers 2x magnification over the main lens, so this also acts as a telephoto camera. 2x may not be a ground-breaking amount, but still is impressive for Tecno. The third camera module has a 120-degrees ultrawide-angle lens and 8MP sensors. The camera setup is backed by a Quad-LED flash. There aren’t silly depth sensors or “AI” cameras.
On the front-facing camera department, we have a pill-shaped notch that houses two cameras. The main camera is a 48MP unit that comes alongside an 8MP ultrawide module with a 105-degrees lens. These two are helped by a dual-LED flash. On paper, the Tecno Phantom X has one of the more impressive camera setups to launch this year.
Thankfully the device does not disappoint in other aspects. It flaunts a 6.7-inch SuperAMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. The panel has big curves that further affirms its premium profile. The company equipped it with a Gorilla Glass 5 coating on the front and on the back. The fingerprint scanner sits underneath the screen and can unlock the phone in 0.4 seconds.
Not a premium horsepower
Unfortunately, the Achilles’ hell of this handset rests on the processing part. It comes with a MediaTek Helio G95 chip.
It’s not a bad chipset, but it is getting a little bit old at this point, especially when it has a 12nm fabrication process. Technically, it’s a good chipset, maybe just not the most power-efficient. It features two Cortex-A76 cores clocked at up to 2.05GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2.0GHz. The device also has a Mali-G76 MC4 GPU and it comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of Internal Storage. Tecno Phantom X boasts a vapor chamber cooling system that is attached to the chipset. It promises to keep it 3-5Āŗ cooler.
The Tecno Phantom X draws power from a 4,700mAh battery with 33W fast-charging support. It runs Android 11 straight out of the box with Tecno HiOS running on top. The Phantom X will reach the market in Starry Night Blue and Monet’s Summer colorways. Unfortunately, the price still remains a mystery, but Tecno should reveal it and disclose availability details in the next few weeks.
