The virtual RAM feature isn’t something new on PCs. The feature is available for eons on multiple operating systems. Now, it is finally reaching smartphones. No matter if you think it is a mere gimmick, marketing, or anything in this class, this is becoming a trend. It all started with Vivo bringing an extended RAM feature on OriginOS. The feature, then, migrated to the FuntouchOS 11 builds. Now, Xiaomi is also introducing its own take on virtual RAM memory. However, the company is starting slowly as this possibly is a feature that will be held under the wraps for MIUI 13. Today, the Redmi Note 10 Pro 5G is becoming one of the first Xiaomi smartphones with an extended RAM feature. The company is rolling out an update that adds 2GB of virtual RAM to the premium mid-range smartphone.
Gizchina News of the week
The Redmi Note 10 Pro 5G is the most powerful smartphone in the lineup. It’s only available in China right now but should make its global debut next month as a POCO X3 GT. The device has an impressive setup composed of a 6nm chip, the Dimensity 1100 SoC, and a Mali-G77 GPU with nine cores. Now, Xiaomi is rolling out an update that can add extra RAM for the multiple variants of the smartphone. The Redmi Note 10 Pro 5G is available in variants with 6 GB or 8 GB of RAM. So with the feature enabled, the system will take a part of your internal storage and make that amount go up to 8 GB or 10 GB respectively. Of course, virtual RAM isn’t the same as physical RAM, but it can still bring certain improvements.
The new update is quite small and is mostly a patch that adds the new feature. We’re pretty sure that Xiaomi will start to implement this feature on more smartphones pretty soon. However, it should take part as one of the big features introduced by the MIUI 13 OS update. Xiaomi usually implements some features to officially reveal the final implementation in major MIUI upgrades. The same happened with Dark Mode and the gestures mode. The virtual RAM feature probably will be one of the big announcements at the MIUI 13 keynote. However, we don’t think all smartphones will have it available. After all, it requires internal storage with decent reading speeds such as those based on UFS 2.1 standard and above.
Are you excited for the extended RAM feature? Or does it sound like a mere gimmick. Let your impressions in the comments below.
