Samsung Exynos SoC with AMD GPU surfaces on GPU benchmark

Samsung Exynos 2200

Earlier this year, Samsung announced that it is working alongside AMD to develop a custom GPU for its Exynos processors. After revamping the business of CPUs for PCs, AMD seems to be interesting in agitating competition in the smartphone scene. The chipmaker will bring a new mobile GPU that probably will be the first to bring ray-tracing to smartphones. According to reports, the new Exynos chip featuring AMD RDNA 2 GPU will be announced in July. So we’re just a couple of weeks away from the new chip announcement. Ahead of the official release, some of the key details of the chipset have appeared. The new GPU has been benchmarked and shows performance superior to Apple’s A14 Bionic chip.

Samsung Exynos CPU with AMD-powered GPU passes through 3D Mark

The new Exynos chip featuring an AMD GPU passed through the Wild Life test of the 3D Mark. The tipster notes that the Samsung chip scored 8,134 points in its internal testing. It is worth noting that the CPU is based on the older Cortex-A77 architecture. We expect the results to be better once the new Cortex architecture is taken in account.

The new chip beats Samsung’s own Exynos 2100 SoC and Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chip. These have scores of 5,295 and 5,382, respectively. Notable, the new Samsung chip also beats the Apple A14 Bionic chip, which scored 7668 in the GPU test. The performance score looks impressive, however, efficiency may also play an important role. While it was better than the Exynos 2100 inefficiency, the chip failed to surpass the Snapdragon 888 in the same department.

There are no other details available on the new Samsung chip with the AMD RDNA 2. It is expected to unlock some gaming features which will finally take smartphone gaming one level had. In fact, one of the features teased at Computer 2021 is ray tracing. This is one of the technologies that is pushing the new console generation forward. Seeing this on smartphones would be really impressive. The new GPU also promises variable-rate shading and higher fidelity graphics. The new features will also offer better efficiency.

As per the reports, the new AMD-powered RDNA 2 GPU will be present on the Samsung Galaxy S22 series. Samsung will make the announcement in the next month and will have several months to start mass manufacturing it. The success of this GPU may determine the continuity of the partnership between AMD and the Korean firm in the smartphone scene.
