Intel and AMD have been fighting for the preference of PC users since immemorial. For a long time, Intel managed to grab the upper hand, but since the AMD Ryzen series arrival, the company has been struggling to keep its position. While Intel still is dominant in the laptop segment, we can say that a large majority of PC enthusiasts prefer AMD Ryzen CPUs. However, things may become more interesting with the arrival of Intel Alder Lage 12th generation CPUs. According to leaked Geekbench scores of 12-th gen, the Intel Core i7 CPU will offer a considerable jump over its present generation offering. Moreover, it will overcome AMD’s upper-mid tier desktop chip, the Ryzen 7 5800X.
According to the Geekbench scores, the Intel Core i7 12th gen CPU, which is most likely a pre-commercial sample of the Core i7-12700, registered 1,763 points in the single score. When it comes to the multi-core department, it amassed an impressive score of 11,895 points. The processor was running on pre-launch firmware and was tested on software that doesn’t yet recognize its platform. So, the actual scores of the CPU might be even better after the launch. The processor was running at a possibly lowered base clock speed of 2.1 GHz and is rated for a peak boost clock of 4.8 GHz.

12th gen Intel CPUs to represent a significant boost in terms of performance
The Core i7-12700 single-core is about 7 percent lower than the leaked scores of the purported Core i9-12900. Although the i7 was associated with the high-end segment, this place now belongs to the Core i9 processors. The 12th-gen Core i7 CPU is 3.5 percent faster than its predecessor. Moreover, against AMD rivals it gets a 4.5 percent higher single-core score over the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X and 5.8 percent higher score than the Ryzen 7 5800X. The real difference, however, lies in the multi-core department. The new Intel processor surpasses its AMD parallel by around 15 percent.
In terms of the multi-core scores, the Intel Core i7-12700 CPU is outpaced by a massive margin of over 45 percent by its upcoming bigger sibling, the i9-12900K. This shows the actual performance difference that the two CPUs will offer in intense tasks. The one-generation older Ryzen 5950X still is 40 percent faster than the Core i7-12700. However, when it comes to the i9, AMD’s CPU is 15 percent faster. Putting things in perspective, the Intel Core i7 12th gen chipset is a decent upgrade over its older generation.
AMD will introduce its Zen 3 architecture-based 3D V-Cache platform of Ryzen CPUs. We assume that these CPUs will come under the 6000 series. These CPUs promise about a 20 percent improvement in terms of performance. With that in mind, Intel will face a serious challenge in the premium and performance PC segments.
