MediaTek revamped its name in the market last year with the introduction of the Dimensity series of 5G chips. However, this year has been much more significant for the Chinese maker as it has established its name in the market as the largest chipset supplier. More importantly, the company has become the choice of many mainstream brands like Oppo, Realme, Xiaomi, and even OnePlus. The latter always used Snapdragon chips but decided to bet on the Dimensity 1200 SoC for the OnePlus Nord 2. MediaTek is pretty aware of the popularity of its Dimensity 1200 and is already preparing a successor that will be more appealing, the Dimensity 2000.
Back in the last month, rumors emerged claiming that MediaTek’s next-generation Dimensity flagship SoCs will use the brand new ARMv9 architecture. In terms of architecture, the new SoCs will be the first to use TSMC’s 4 nm manufacturing process. These details have been spreading in the past few months, and now Chinese leakster Digital Chat Station brings further details about the platform.
MediaTek Dimensity 2000 SoC specifications
According to the leakster, the Dimensity 2000 SoC will feature one ARM Cortex-X2 prime core running at 3.0 GHz. This chipset is the direct successor of the Cortex-X1 that is present on the Snapdragon 888 and Samsung Exynos 2100 SoCs. MediaTek didn’t use the Cortex-X1 on its Dimensity 1200 SoC but will go one step beyond it with its next flagship SoC.
Gizchina News of the week
In addition to the Prime Core, the CPU will also use three ARM Cortex-A710 cores and four ARM Cortex-A510 cores. This is the very same setup as the upcoming Snapdragon 898 and Exynos 2200. As a result, the MediaTek Dimensity 2000 will be in the same category as Qualcomm and Samsung flagship offerings. The Dimensity 1200 is what we can call an “entry-level flagship CPU” as it’s beyond most of the mid-range SoCs, but isn’t in the same level as the Snapdragon 888 or Exynos 2100 SoCs. The story will be different in the next year.
As per rumors, the Exynos 2200 and Snapdragon 898 will also use the 4 nm architecture. However, they will be fabbed at Samsung’s 4 nm foundries. In terms of graphical powers, the Dimensity 2000 will have a Mali-G710 MC10 GPU. We assume this will be the first and for a while only chipset to use the new Mali G710. Samsung is leaving Mali GPUs behind in favor of AMD GPU and Huawei’s future in chipset manufacturing is unpredictable. For those unaware, the Mali G710 is 20 percent faster than the Mali G78.
With similar specifications, clock speeds and other technologies will be determining factors to crown the best flagship SoC next year. The Exynos 2200 is aiming at 3.0 GHz for the prime core. Qualcomm, on the other hand, might be aiming slightly higher at 3.09 GHz, according to the tipster Ice Universe.
According to rumors, all three companies will unveil their new 4nm-based chips in the end of 2021. Of course, the plans can change due to the continuous disruption in the market of semiconductors.
