Last week, the President of the European Parliament talked about why they do not share Apple’s fears that the unification of the USB Type-C connector could somehow harm innovation. In particular, there were reports that they can always “adapt the rules” if a new standard emerges. Today the European Parliament office decided to explain its position on this issue to Android Authority.
It has been said that the USB Type-C port is the technology that has been chosen as the general standard. But this in no way prevents manufacturers from developing other technologies that will provide better charging and data transfer. In addition, in a statement, the European Parliament report that there will be a transitional period to transfer devices to a new standard, which “will not lead to the rapid obsolescence of gadgets on the market.”
The unification of the USB Type-C port
Recall that talks about the adoption of USB Type-C as a standard for all devices have been going on in Europe for several years. But only now the European Parliament has come close to unifying this connector; by adopting the appropriate mandates in legislative acts.

The main opponent and adversary of this initiative is Apple. The company argued that such a move would slow down innovation and lead to an increase in e-waste. But it seems that the officials of the European Parliament are determined; and the decision to unify USB Type-C will be made. True, it will enter into force only two years after its adoption.
“At the moment, USB type-C is a technology that they set as a common standard. However, standardization organizations and industry can develop other technologies that provide better quality charging and data transfer,” a European Parliament representative note in response to an emailed query, adding that there’ll be a transition period for the industry and consumers.
“We will have a natural phase-out that will not make swiftly obsolete the devices in the market (sic);” the representative explained.
