Back in the last week, Google introduced its flagship smartphone series for 2021 in the form of Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The device’s camera with a set of improvements in terms of hardware like the Tensor chipset. However, the new smartphones also arrived to showcase Android 12 in its maximum glory with a number of exclusive software features and Material You. For those unaware, Material You is a major refresh over the interface introduced in the days of Android Lollipop and after with Android 9 Pie. Material You change many aspects and rely on a wallpaper-based theming engine. With this, many Google Apps change their color accent based on the wallpaper and the colors determined by the UI. A number of Google Apps already support this on Pixel smartphones, the latest addition is the Google Translate App.
The new finding comes from 9to5Mac via XDA Developers. Apparently, the Google Translate app on the Pixel 6 has received a new update. The update brings the much-awaited Material You redesign. As usual, the redesign seems to be exclusive for the Pixel 6 series. We’re not sure if Google will expand this to other smartphones, but we’ll find that soon. The colors in the app will dynamically adjust based on the wallpaper you’re using on your smartphones. However, the auto-theming feature on Google Apps is still exclusive to Google smartphones.
Gizchina News of the week
Google Translate App with Material You Design and Monet support
The app brings some obvious visual changes and you can see the accent and colored background in action. The hamburger menu is gone, and the buttons are rounded and bubbly. Controls for switching languages have also become bigger. The buttons for camera and voice and an option to enable interpreter mode have been relocated to the bottom. As a result, it’s much easier to reach with one hand. The report confirms that Android 12’s wallpaper-based dynamic theming is working with the app.
Since last month, Google has been working on a major redesign for the Google Translate app. The change was reported a few months ago by XDA-Developers after a teardown in the application’s September update. Again, the redesign seems to be locked to the Pixel 6 series. But we think that custom ROM developers will find a way to change this soon. Unfortunately, we don’t know how this app will work on custom ROMs based on Android 12. For now, Google still has the Monet-theming engine locked to its handsets.
