Google Updates Camera App for Pixel 6 Series, Adds Multiple New Features and Improvements


Google is seeding out an update for its Camera app, compete with new features and updates, just in time for the sale of the Google Pixel 6 series.

Along with the new features, the latest update to the Google Camera, which features the version number v8.4.167 also brings with it multiple new enhancements and performance related fixes.

As of the time of writing this article, the update seems to be limited to Google’s Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, with the only way to use it on older Pixels being sideloading, which itself seems to crash after installing.

What Does the New Pixel 6 Camera Update Have to Offer?

As per screenshots shared on Twitter by Mishaal Rahman, this new update brings with it a toggle for manual white balance and exposure controls. A new Timer light feature flashes the back camera light during the timer.

Out of all these updates however, the most noteworthy one is the support for Bluetooth mic, which means that users can now use their wireless earbuds and Bluetooth devices to record audio on their Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. This comes after XDA Developers spotted it in an initial build of the app.

This update comes after Google told Android Authority that it intends to bring some of the new software features of the Pixel 6 series to older Pixels, but added that Live Translate may not make the cut, since the Tensor chip plays a big role.

Are There Any Other Updates?

In other Pixel 6 news, once users receive their smartphones and start to set them up, they will be prompted with a software update. This firmware comes with firmware version SD1A.210817.036.A8 for Verizon customers and SD1A.210817.036 for the rest.

The update will be downloaded automatically in the background once the device setup is complete. However, it does not happen, then you’ll need to navigate to the Phone’s Settings menu and hit the System >> Software update sub-menu.

Google makes it clear that the update should not hit all eligible devices tomorrow. As usual, this will be a staged rollout and may take a few days to hit all the eligible smartphones.

If you do not get it on your Pixel 6 after the unboxing, the update may not be available for download. However, in a few days, the update should cover the entire lineup
