Netflix revealed its intentions of bringing games to its ecosystem earlier this year. At that time we thought we would need to wait a while for seeing the first games on the platform. However, Netflix was ready for kicking off this new segment. In fact, the first form of “Netlfix Gaming” is far from what would expect from a company like Netflix. However, it already shows the company’s interest in this particular segment. In the future, we may see the giant of streaming joining the segment of cloud gaming like other giants such as Microsoft, Amazon, and NVIDIA.
Today, Netflix is rolling out its “Netflix Gaming” that basically brings a few mobile games to members with Android smartphones. This is basically the entry step for the company that revolutionized the world of video streaming. In fact, it allows Android subscribers to access paid games with their Netflix subscription. That said, users only need a valid Netflix subscription to play those games and there will be no additional fees or in-app purchases. It’s almost like having an “access card” for certain paid games that uses your credentials on the video platform.
Gizchina News of the week
This is the company’s major move since the arrival of its video streaming service
As per the original report, this new strategy basically brings back some memories from when Netflix moved from sending DVDs-by-mail to streaming movies. The move into the game segment was announced in July. Worth noting that the company has faced a sharp slowdown in new customers after years of rapid expansion, a boom in 2020 in light of the pandemic, and searing competition from the likes of Dinesy+ and HBO Max.
The company has already unveiled a bunch of games. There are games based on one of the most popular shows Stranger Things like “Stranger Things: 1984”, “Stranger Things 3: The Game”. There are also other games “Card Blas”, “Teeter Up” and “Shooting Hoops” titles on Android to Netflix members in Spain, Italy, and Poland.
Interestingly, the streaming giant has also bought video game creator “Night School Studio” in September and rolled out five mobile gaming titles in select European markets.
For now, Netflix’s entrance into the gaming segment may not be appealing for everyone. However, we know that the company has the potential and resources to be a relevant player in this segment. In the future, we may see Netflix switching its business to a cloud-based system. There are even reports suggesting a partnership between the US giant and Sony PlayStation division. Let’s wait and see.
