A few years ago, MediaTek was stuck in limbo with few to no relevancy when compared to Qualcomm and its chipsets. The company’s chips could only be found on small Chinese brands’ smartphones. After failed attempts for the flagship market like the Helio X10 or X30 chips that tried to make their name with deca-core architectures, the brand decided to rethink its strategies. In 2019, we saw the return of the brand with the Helio G90T SoC. It was a very good chipset for the mid-range segment. However, the big overhaul came in 2020 when the brand introduced the Dimensity lineup of 5G chipsets. For the next year, the brand is preparing its true return to the flagship segment with the Dimensity 2000 SoC. However, a tipster states that this isn’t the real name of the upcoming flagship SoC.
Dimensity 2000 isn’t the real name of MediaTek’s flagship SoC
MediaTek achieved great popularity with its Dimensity lineup. After all, while Qualcomm was selling its 5G chips as something for the “premium” segment, MediaTek managed to bring mid-range and even low-end 5G chips. This year, the brand enhanced its game with the Dimensity 1200 and DImensity 1100 SoC. The chips were made on the 6 nm architecture which is one step behind Qualcomm, Samsung, and Apple. Even so, the chip has conquered many brands that used it in their flagship killer and premium mid-range smartphones. Meanwhile, the mid-range and low-end 5G chips kept their growth in availability. Today, MediaTek is the largest chipset maker with the biggest part of the market. Full of confidence, the Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer is ready to compete in the flagship segment.
The next-generation chipset will be aiming at the 4 nm architecture and will bring ARM Cortex-X2 cores, A710 cores, and A510 cores. This configuration is similar to the offerings from Samsung and Qualcomm. The major difference is that MediaTek will rely on TSMC 4 nm manufacturing process.
Gizchina News of the week
MediaTek Dimensity 9000 is the new flagship SoC from MediaTek
Today, the reliable tipster, Ice Universe disclosed via Twitter post that MediaTek’s next-gen chip will be known as Dimensity 9000 instead of Dimensity 2000. Interestingly, this comes at the same time when Qualcomm’s next-generation chip will bring a different naming. Instead of Snapdragon 898, it may come with a Snapdragon 8 Gen1 moniker (yeah, that name sucks). Given Ice Universe’s good track record, we have strong reasons to believe in his claims. Furthermore, it makes sense, especially when the Dimensity 1200 isn’t a chipset that competes with the SD888 or Exynos 2100. MediaTek wants to make sure that its upcoming chip will feel like a massive upgrade over the Dimensity 1200.
