In October of this year, Google launched the Android 12 operating system for tablets, foldable smartphones, and other devices. This system has been specifically optimized for the adaptation of large-screen APPs. At that time, the industry speculated that Google’s move was to pave the way for its own foldable smartphone. Furthermore, there were reports that Google’s new foldable smartphone is the Pixel Fold.
However, a recent report claims that Google had canceled the Pixel Fold. Today, industry insider Ross Young broke the news that Google decided to abandon the release of the Pixel Fold foldable smartphone and the company did not proceed with component orders. According to the report, after an analysis of what the Pixel Fold will offer, Google saw that the device will not be competitive. It will not be able to handle Samsung in the U.S., Europe, and other markets.
In the Chinese market, Motorola, Huawei, Xiaomi, and other brands have mass-produced foldable smartphones. Oppo will soon unveil its own foldable smartphone. In contrast, Google Pixel Fold is not competitive enough.
Gizchina News of the week
According to reports, Google Pixel Fold uses a folding solution similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3. The screen is an LTPO 120Hz high-swipe screen, a rear 12MP main camera, 12MP ultra-wide-angle, and 8MP telephoto lenses.
Google Pixel Fold speculations
This latest report is in contrast to earlier reports that Google Pixel Fold will launch next year. There were reports that the Pixel Fold will have a book format. It will come with a flexible inner screen and an auxiliary display in the outer part of the case. This smartphone was also rumored to arrive with several cameras.
According to the available data, in terms of camera sensors, the Google Pixel Fold 5G will be inferior to the Google Pixel 6 Pro. In particular, the main camera will include a 12.2-megapixel Sony IMX363 sensor. For comparison, the Google Pixel 6 Pro has a 50-megapixel Samsung GN1.
In addition, the camera of the flexible smartphone will receive a 12-megapixel unit based on the Sony IMX386 sensor with ultra-wide-angle optics. We are talking about the presence of two selfie cameras – one for the outdoor screen and the other for the indoor. Both of them will receive an 8-megapixel Sony IMX355 sensor.
It is important to note that this report did not say Google will not launch a foldable smartphone at all. It only says that Google is dropping the foldable smartphone idea for now. Hopefully, the company will release this device in the future.
