Xiaomi unveiled the Redmi Note 8 in 2019 and the device quickly became a best-seller. The appealing price and decent specifications made it a quick hit. For that reason, the company tried to offer good support for the millions of users that acquired the devices. Despite the MIUI updates, the company’s support for Android was marked by delayed updates. The device reached the market with Android 9 Pie and took an entire year to get Android 10. Now, almost one year after the first update, it’s getting Android 11. We can say that despite the delay, it’s better late than never, as the mid-range smartphone has got two major Android updates which are unusual even today.
The Redmi Note 8 is getting the 2020 version of Android at the end of 2021, this may sound bad, but it’s still the second major update that the device could gent. I don’t think that anyone was expecting it to get Android 12, so the biggest problem is the time that it took to get global users. The update reached Chinese owners of the handset in March, which was very acceptable. Several months later, it is reaching Indian users and the worst part is that it does not even bring MIUI 12.5, just the plain MIUI 12.0.1.0 version.

Redmi Note 8 gets its second major Android update
The update started to roll out today for a few select users who reported the news on Twitter. The Android 11 update boasts firmware version MIUI 12.0.1.0.RCOINXM and weighs over 2 GB in size. Xiaomi itself didn’t reveal much about the update. A known fact is that it brings an updated October Android security patch. Interestingly, the update also adds the Memory Extension feature, but it’s limited to 1 GB. We assume that this has to do with the limited storage as the Redmi Note 8 has variants with 64 GB of Storage.
As we mentioned before, the update only has MIUI 12 and not MIUI 12.5. So the Indian users and global customers will need to wait a bit longer to receive the newer MIUI patch. We don’t know if the MIUI 13 update will reach this smartphone just yet. However, we don’t see a big problem preventing it from coming. After all, Xiaomi does not really need to change the underlying Android version to bring newer MIUI versions. Unless that there is something in the new version that relies directly on Android 12. Time will tell.
As usual, this is a staged rollout, so it may take a few days to reach all eligible users in the country.
